The hiking trail along the historic Semmering Railway

Starting from Semmering station, a path leads along the railway tracks first of all to Wolfsbergskogel station. Shortly afterwards there is a magnificent panoramic view of the most interesting section of the railway from the vantage point on the Doppelreiterkogel. From here you can watch the train on its journey from Klamm through the Blue Cutting, the Weinzettlwand Tunnel with its galleries, the Weinzettl Feld Tunnel, Breitenstein station,
then through the Krausl Tunnel, the smallest tunnel on the whole railway, over the Krausl Defile and through the Polleruswand after the tunnel, then the ride over probably the most impressive structure of Ghega's railway, the viaduct called "Cold Gully".
The signposted path leads on to the place where the picture was taken for the old 20-shilling banknote. Then it goes over the "Red Mountain" on to the Fleischmannbrücke and along the railway tracks with a wonderful view of Breitenstein and the line to Klamm.
From "Cold Gully" (6) onwards the path leads along the upper Adlitzgrabenstraße and past the Iron Cross to Breitenstein. From there it goes along the railway, over the Weinzettlhöhe (7) to Klamm with a view of the Wagner Viaduct and the ruined castle of Klamm. From there the railway hiking trail goes on to Klamm station.

Here hikers have the opportunity to choose between variant A and variant B:

Variant A: on to Gloggnitz station. Here the path leads a few kilometres beside the Ghega Semmering Railway (9) to Eichberg station. On this section there is an impressive view of the railway itself, the Adlitzgräben (10), the Sonnwendstein, Wartenstein Castle and the panorama of the Semmering.
Before Eichberg station there is a wonderful view of the town of Gloggnitz (11) and the upper Schwarzatal. At Eichberg station (12) and (13) the hiking trail leaves the railway line and leads to Gloggnitz Castle (14). You then reach Gloggnitz Castle through the town centre of Gloggnitz.

Variant B: From Klamm station, uphill along the road to the "Dreiländereck" there is an impressive view of Maria Schutz and the Sonnwendstein. After crossing the Kreuzbergstraße a goods path goes downhill in the direction of Küb. You can admire impressive villas and renovated mansions. Above the railway line the path goes on in the direction of Payerbach. On this section there is a wonderful panoramic view of the Gahns and Feuchter (15), of the Schneeberg behind them and the impressive Raxalpe massif to the left.
Between Payerbach and Küb there is the steepest gradient of the Semmering Railway (25 per mill). This stretch of track was also the famous trial ground for the first mountain railway engines. The path goes over the Kreuzberg Viaduct into the centre of Payerbach. From the village square to the resort park and the park bridge (from here you can see the longest viaduct of the Semmering Railway (16) (127 metres long and 25 metres high) the path goes on to the ouldie world and museum station of Payerbach-Reichenau. Here there is a small open-air museum (with a steam engine, a cable car of the Rax cable railway, a set of carriages of the local line) and an exhibition of documentary photographs on the subject of 140 years of the Semmering Railway.
